Yau Wing Fung Chinese, b. 1990
Yau Wing Fung (b. 1990, Hong Kong) received his master’s degree in Fine Arts and bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (First Class Honours) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Yau’s works combine Chinese traditional aesthetics and a contemporary sensibility informed by technological means. His recent paintings mobilize the visual vocabulary of classical landscapes as well as compositions inspired by satellite images. His installations feature experiments with the painting frame that restructure the spatial relationship between viewers and landscape paintings.
Yau centralized the idea of guan, a key concept in Chinese painting theory, in his artistic practice. He once wrote, “My painting of landscapes evolves around the notion of guan.” Guan refers a contemplative way of looking that involves a viewer’s observation of the depicted landscape as well as imagination of a space that expands outside the picture frame. Yau’s landscape paintings generate new visual experience of guan by reconfiguring viewing perspectives, the balance between emptiness and solidness, and the indication of pictorial depth.
Yau has held six solo shows in Hong Kong and Macau. His artworks have appeared at various international exhibitions, such as “Art Basel” (Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre), “Wu Bin: Ten Views of a Lingbi Stone” (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), “Chinese Contemporary Ink” (Christie’s Auction), “Ink Asia” (Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre), “Art Taipei” (Taipei World Trade Center), among others. His paintings have entered public and private collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
