News | Yau Wing Fung - Matter at Ink Asia 2019

Yau Wing Fung is exhibiting his work at. a special exhibition Matter, part of the Ink+ project organized by Ink Asia 2019. Eric Leung curated this show, which is on view at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center from October 4 to 7, 2019. Nine participating artists offered innovative interpretations of ink art by turning to media not commonly associated with painting or calligraphy, such as video and installation. As such, the show aims to expand the meaning of ink art.

For this show, Yau exhibited his multimedia piece Tracing. To create the piece, he cut a piece of sand paper in round shape, with which the artist grinded against a sheet of ink-colored paper. Every action of rubbing produced traces. The ink color verged between erasure and emergence, as sand grains rubbed against the paper surface. Yau created the piece in the dark and recorded the movement of the sand paper by light trail. He paid specific attention to force, speed, and rhythm. Shifts between high and low strength, as well as that between slow and fast speed, strike a chord with the practice of ink and brush.
