Virtual Tour | Transcultural Dialogues: The Journey of East Asian Art to the West

By Jeffrey Wechsler
Jeffrey Wechsler is our guest curator of the current exhibition at FQM, Transcultural Dialogues: The Journey of East Asian Art to the West. Specializing in lesser-known aspects of twentieth-century American art, he reveals to the public the artistic and historic value of worthy but previously underestimated artists and styles. In this video, the curator shares insights into the FQM exhibition, discussing the connection between Abstract Expressionism and East Asian Art. Continuing the 1997 exhibition Asian Traditions Modern Expressions: Asian American Artists and Abstraction 1945 to 1970, while a concurrent exhibition in Hollis Taggart presents Asian American artists and Abstract Expressionist artists whose works were inspired by East Asian art, the FQM exhibition features Classical and Modern Chinese paintings as representations of earlier East Asian Art, and further showcases contemporary Asian art that deals with the synthesis of Abstract Expressionism and East Asian tradition and more American art that explores the same discourse in its particular way.
