  • Zhang Xiaoli

In her paintings, drawings, and prints, Zhang Xiaoli (b.1989) transforms classical Chinese mediums to create nuanced, captivating images that are at once playful and contemplative. The pictorial world of Zhang Xiaoli is composed of classically-inspired landscapes, ancient games, science, and its mystical counterparts. Her eclectic choices of subject matter stem partly from her unique experience of double majoring in Fine Arts and Biology while at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The supposedly opposing forces that are art and science find new harmony in Zhang’s artistic creations, offering holistic ways of understanding the world.

Classically inspired landscapes have remained an essential part in Zhang Xiaoli’s work. From her early project Dialogue Between Pop Culture and Traditional Chinese Painting, where she introduced the visual vocabulary of Lego toys to traditional Chinese landscape paintings, to her most recent project Surrealism in Landscape, landscape provides a nodal point in understanding Zhang’s practice. In Portable Landscape series, it is the bridge that connects tradition with contemporary culture, especially consumerism. Elsewhere, landscapes are elements of a game, an entry point towards Dao, or spiritual retreats during a pandemic. In creating what she calls the “postmodern landscapes” of this era, Zhang Xiaoli signals a pictorial return to nature and classicism, and injects this timeless tradition with a renewed confidence.

  • Lin Yunqian

Lin Yunqian (Q), born in 1989 in Guangxi, China, currently resides and works in New York. In 2019, she earned her MFA from The Savannah College of Art and Design. Lin's artistic pursuits involve a deep exploration of temporal fluctuations. Her inclination towards landscapes and the Earth's innate characteristics is similarly driven by a fascination with the interplay between control and spontaneity, particularly within the dynamic between human engagement and the natural world. Her artistic expression finds its genesis in photography, which she uses as a foundation to explore diverse mediums, including video works and installations, utilizing these mediums to accentuate her fascination with nature and the cyclical patterns of destruction and regeneration.

Lin's work has been recognized as Juror Selection by the New York Center for Photographic Art. Additionally, her inventive work has been prominently featured in various media.

In her captivating "Entropy" series, Lin employs photography to compile a visual archive of the ever-changing natural world. She sees herself as a co-creator, partnering with the dynamic force around her to interlace chance and intention, thus transforming unpredictability into artistic expression. Water, a vital element in Lin’s work, has its own intricacy and creativity. This characteristic is reflected in Lin’s creative approach: she invites water to interact with the original photo she took, dismantling the artwork through reconstruction, which ended up with a new visual effect. Time, elongates her creative process. The flowing water represents the ever-changing physicality of time—— it never stops, just as how water continuously changes the original photo. Water and time together serve as a direct record, an imprint of the natural features encapsulated on film that is water's innate force in a visual tableau.

To Lin, photography goes beyond mere documentation of reality in motion; it transforms into a pathway for delving into the very core of existence itself. It acts as a tool for contemplating the fundamental nature of reality, inviting exploration and introspection. Her unwavering belief in the distinctive synergy between photographic materials, light, and substance fuels an innovative approach to capture fleeting moments authentically.
