65 E 80th St, Ground Floor, New York, NY 10075 FREE TO PUBLIC 3:30 - 5:30 P.m.

FQM cordially invites you to join us for an Artist Talk and Demonstration with Fung Ming-chip on September 13, 2025, in conjunction with the AWNY exhibition Shufa Essentials. This exhibition introduces the foundational principles of shufa—brushstrokes, paper, and Qi—in the art of writing.

In this engaging program, Fung will share his conceptual and experimental approach in combining calligraphic writing and image-making. Based in Hong Kong, Fung is known for his innovative reinterpretation of traditional shufa, integrating his practice in calligraphy, seal carving, and literature.

Artist Talk and Demonstration (3:30 PM – 5:30 PM)

Fung Ming Chip will present a selection of self-invented calligraphic scripts, developed over decades of practice rooted in classical Chinese calligraphy. The talk will highlight key concepts central to his practice, including line, space, time, and structure, and will explore how these ideas inform both the theoretical underpinnings and the technical processes of his work.

Fung’s experiments in calligraphic forms include the incorporation of musical notation, numerical patterns, and mechanical sequences. One of the central themes of his work, the idea of a “trace of time,” will be demonstrated live. This concept involves layering water and ink in different sequences, each leaving a distinct lasting pattern on the paper.

The talk will be conducted in English.

We encourage attendees to arrive 30 minutes early to experience Shufa Essentials, which will provide valuable context for understanding Fung’s artistic practice of the dynamic relationship between paper, water, and ink. Join us for this special opportunity to delve into the evolving language of shufa and celebrate Fung Ming Chip’s bold and reflective journey in expanding the possibilities of calligraphic art.

This program will be offered on-site, welcoming all participants to RSVP.
