Fung has invented over one hundred of these “scripts”, each uniquely embodying a feeling or conveying the passage of time.
Beginning in the 1990s, Fung began to experiment with processes that integrate time in shufa in new ways. He builds layers of texture using washes of ink and water; for example, in this piece, Fung started by writing characters in dark ink and then painted over them in a similar shade of gray. Though these processes break from the conventions that define traditional shufa practice, Fung’s works explore how layers of creation can be encoded into a flat surface, making the chronological sequence of Fung’s practice apparent to viewers.
