The exhibition ”BILD MACHT RELIGION (IMAGE POWERS RELIGION)–Art between Reverence, Prohibition and Destruction“holds by the by Art Museum Bochum, Germany, in cooperation with the Center for Religious Studies (CERES) of the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. On show are works by Joseph Beuys, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Lalla Essaydi, Nicola Samorì, Michael Triegel, Andy Warhol, Ben Willikens and other famous international contemporary artists. In addition, there are historical objects from different religious traditions.

Dealing with Artworks in religion and art is ambivalent. On the one hand, they enable one to see something that cannot be seen and even making them attractive, for example, saints, gods, or transcendent beings. On the other hand, the artworks also showed something that may perhaps remain betters in invisible. Artworks in religion developed a sensitivity for the presence of the absent and the absence of the present.
