We are delighted to share that artist Fung Ming-chip will be featured in two major international exhibitions this fall: the Jeonnam International Sumuk Biennale 2025 in Korea and Metamorphosis: Chinese Imagination and Transformation at China Institute in New York. Together, these presentations underscore Fung’s central role in redefining the language of ink and calligraphy within a global contemporary context.
Jeonnam International Sumuk Biennale 2025
August 28 – October 31, 2025
Locations: Mokpo, Jindo, Haenam (Jeollanam-do, South Korea)
Theme: Somewhere Over the Yellow Sea
Artistic Director: Yun Cheagab (尹在甲)
Organizer: Jeonnam Art & Culture Foundation
Launched in 2018, the Jeonnam International Sumuk Biennale is the world’s only biennale dedicated to Sumuk (ink painting). The 2025 edition, themed Somewhere Over the Yellow Sea, reimagines East Asia as a maritime civilization—a fluid, multi-core cultural sphere shaped by exchange across the Yellow Sea. It challenges traditional notions of center and periphery, inviting reflection on both “the West as the Other” and “Asia as the Other.”
Fung Ming-chip will be featured in the section “Blurring the Boundaries Between Script and Image” at the Sojeon Museum of Art, Jindo. His experimental works deconstruct the written character into visual and philosophical fields, where brush and ink dissolve the boundary between text and image. In doing so, Fung’s practice resonates with the Biennale’s vision of ink as a living, evolving medium bridging tradition and reinvention.

Exhibition: Metamorphosis: Chinese Imagination and Transformation
Curator: Dr. Susan L. Beningson
Venue: China Institute, New York
This landmark exhibition features works by 28 contemporary artists of Chinese descent, spanning painting, sculpture, photography, animation, and installation. Organized around four thematic strands—Metamorphosis of the Body and Self, Metamorphosis of the Environment and Natural World, Historical and Cultural Metamorphosis, and Spiritual Metamorphosis—the exhibition highlights dynamic processes of change across individual, cultural, and material dimensions.
Fung Ming-chip’s contribution embodies the spirit of metamorphosis through his innovative calligraphic practice. By transforming script into abstract, rhythmic patterns, Fung dissolves the distinction between writing and image, opening space for new dialogues between Eastern and Western artistic traditions.
