Wang Mansheng (b. 1962) grew up in Shanxi, China, immersed in classical Chinese literature and calligraphy. After graduating from Fudan University in Shanghai, he spent a decade directing and producing cultural programs for China Central Television before relocating to the United States. There, he continued to refine his artistic practice, drawing inspiration from both the Hudson River Valley’s natural environment and his extensive travels. This confluence of East and West, ancient and modern, underlies Wang’s work and fuels his ongoing exploration of the expressive possibilities of ink painting.
In this series of landscape paintings, Wang expands upon the traditional ink medium to achieve layered textures and subtle luminosity using a distinctive blend of ink, walnut ink, tempera, and acrylic. The rugged stone formations and ethereal mists seen across these works evoke a dialogue between permanence and transience, earth and sky. Wang’s brushstrokes articulate the raw power of mountain cliffs and rushing water, while delicate washes of color capture fleeting moments of moonlight or mist. By incorporating natural pigments gleaned from his surroundings and adapting classical Chinese techniques to a contemporary context, Wang creates landscapes that transcend temporal and cultural boundaries, inviting viewers to contemplate nature’s vastness and the quiet poetry it inspires.
