I found some freshly caught eels in the marketplace. Their skin patterns interested me deeply. These marks reveal certain primordial traces of evolution, which, at least to me, signal ferocity and dangerous uncertainties. In my work, I am fascinated by these direct, biological expressions, which are unmediated by humans and have nothing to do with concepts or value judgments. Scattered throughout their wrinkly skins, the eels’ dark, bluish dots are like a hint. I want to get a sense of their existence without any preconceived ideas, to transfer these firsthand experiences onto silk canvas without any reservation, and to understand a body against your own, with the former being any element of the world.
