The artist’s reverence for something he called the “unbalanced balance” in nature was an important source of inspiration throughout his career. In his calligraphy, the overall balance in this character was achieved by changing the speed and tension in the brushstrokes. This approach allowed him to convey the dynamic interplay between movement and stillness, reflecting the philosophical concept of balance that pervades Daoism. The dynamic background complements the character, creating a sense of the Dao as if it were floating within the universe. This visual representation serves as a profound interpretation of Daoist principles, capturing the essence of how the Dao permeates all aspects of existence. Furthermore, while Wang Fangyu’s work is deeply rooted in East Asian philosophical traditions, it also aligns with the gallery’s notion of providing audiences with a sense of tranquility.
