Xie Lingyun's original poem alludes to a line in 离骚: "朝搴阰之木兰兮，夕揽洲之宿莽" in which Qu Yuan is chanting his elegant personality and dignity with the symbolic gestures of acquiring orchid, which in Xie Lingyun’s context is accompanied by his fear that this spirit might be jeopardized by the “frost,” a symbol of difficulties.
朝搴苑中蘭，畏彼霜下歇。暝還雲際宿，弄此石上月。鳥鳴識夜棲，木落知風發。異音同至聽，殊響俱清越。妙物莫為賞，芳醑谁与伐？美人竟不来，阳阿徒晞髮。
