In Riding Mist XXI, Yau deconstructed the various elements of the stones, and then reorganized them into a grid structure. By appropriating the format of satellite images, Yau invites the audiences to view his works geometrically. Despite the division of the image, his paintings retain an overall compositional coherency. The straight vertical lines create obvious rifts in some parts of the composition; in some other parts, the haze and rocks traverse the boundaries, joining the grids together. The space unfolds as discontinuous parts of a landscape as well as a sequence of interrelated images, shifting the focus between individual parts and the whole, between the reading of consecutive grids and the sight of a landscape.
