News | Michael Cherney interviewed by Imageink

Imageink Magazine

We are pleased to share that artist Michael Cherney (秋麦) was recently interviewed by Imageink in a wide-ranging conversation on his artistic practice, inspirations, and reflections on the intersections of Chinese art history and contemporary photography.

In the interview, Cherney reflected on the profound depth of Chinese art and culture, which he approaches with humility and respect. He spoke about how scholarly dialogue, book formats such as the accordion-bound, and the principles of Chinese aesthetics have shaped his work, encouraging him to break free from the photographic rectangle, infuse rhythm and narrative into images, and explore nature as a state of constant change. Rejecting narrow definitions of identity, Cherney views his art as a synthesis across cultures and media, aiming simply “to create that which is uniquely my own.”

The interview provides a rare and candid insight into Cherney’s journey, an ongoing dialogue among history, scholarship, and personal practice, wherein each cycle of creation, reflection, and reinterpretation enhances his comprehension of both art and self.

The full interview video is now available to view online. The article will be published in an upcoming issue of Imageink. Stay tuned.
