News | Fu Qiumeng Fine Art Announces Representation of Brandon Sadler

Fu Qiumeng Fine Art is pleased to announce the representation of Brandon Sadler (b. 1986), an Atlanta-based artist whose work aligns with the gallery’s mission to examine the evolving relationship between East Asian traditions and contemporary artistic expression in a globalized world. While invested in learning from the tradition of Chinese calligraphy, Sadler is particularly drawn to its format and composition, seeing calligraphy and brushwork as a medium to channel his personal narratives and transcultural experiences. His Single Word Character series reinterprets the structure of Chinese script, compressing entire English words into a square format—mirroring the design principles of traditional Chinese characters. Sadler’s practice exemplifies FQM’s dedication to presenting artists who engage thoughtfully with classical Asian aesthetics while redefining their expressive boundaries.

Sadler’s initial encounters with East Asian culture came through influences—Shaw Brothers cinema, martial arts philosophy, and Japanese manga—his engagement with traditions beyond his birth culture is marked by sincerity and depth. Through studying Chinese ink paintings and Japanese woodblock prints, Sadler developed a personal artistic philosophy rooted in the pursuit of spiritual transcendence—one that extends beyond cultural or religious confines. His practice emphasizes a mindful yet physical engagement with materials, viewing artistic creation as a meditative act that bridges tradition and personal expression. By weaving his African American heritage into his evolving understanding of East Asian art, he constructs an artistic world that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. As the artist himself states, his work is “an expression of Blackness not indebted to the parameters of the American lens; it carries prayers and ancestral underpinnings while searching for transcendence in a modern world.”

Brandon Sadler is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice encompasses painting, calligraphy, murals, installations, and mixed-media works. He studied Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and was recognized with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2019 for his acclaimed murals in Marvel Studios’ Black Panther and his significant contributions to the arts. Sadler’s cross-cultural practice has garnered increasing recognition, with notable projects including a 2023 collaboration with the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, where he designed the entry galleries for the Samurai exhibition. His artistic vision has also led to collaborations with Disney, Google, and Microsoft, demonstrating his ability to engage diverse audiences across fine art, design, and commercial platforms.

To inaugurate this partnership, Fu Qiumeng Fine Art will present Sadler’s solo exhibition, Along The Way: Transforming the Traditional, marking his New York City debut. Running through March 8, 2025, the show opens with a reception on February 6 (5–8 PM), followed by an artist talk and live demonstration on March 1 (2:30–4 PM).
