FQM cordially invites you to attend the Artist Talk and Demonstration with Zhang Xiaoli, taking place on January 27th. Accompanying the New York exhibition, “Whimsical Maze,” this event explores the Eastern tradition of Gongbibrushwork, elegant gardens, and the symbolic language found in the "Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden,” as well as in artist Zhang Xiaoli’s work. Featuring works on silk and paper, the event offers a dive into a parallel world of ethereal wonders, the creative process, and the history of Landscape painting. The event details are as follows:
- Artist Talk (11:00 AM - 12:00 PM): Zhang Xiaoli will introduce the historical development of "Green and Blue Landscapes 青綠山水,” revisiting classic masterpieces such as Gu Kaizhi's “The Nymph of the Luo River 《洛神赋图》卷," Wang Ximeng's "A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains 《千里江山图》卷," She will present her "Lego Landscape" series, discussing its alignment with the "Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden 《芥子园画谱》” and her own "Paradise Manual 《乐园画谱》.” The talk will cover the application of Taoist landscapes, Chinese Feng-Shui, and divination in her works, touching upon various elements such as caves, paradises, Mount Meru, dimensions of time and space. She will also briefly explain the materials and techniques of Gongbi painting, which range from paper and silk to glue, alum, and brushes. Additionally, she will discuss the color system and techniques specific to Chinese painting.

- Artist Demonstration (2:30 PM - 3:30 PM, limited 18 guests): Join Zhang Xiaoli for the demonstration of traditional Chinese Green and Blue Landscape techniques, along with her signature Lego Mountain and Stone techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the serene beauty of Gongbi painting. This hands-on session encourages attendees to explore and experiment with ink art mediums under the guidance of Zhang Xiaoli.
