Echoing the compositional elements of Summer Mountains, a celebrated handscroll attributed to Qu Ding (ca. 1050), the scene is anchored by a cluster of massive boulders that recede into the distance along the right. The snowy whiteness is set off by expanses of water rendered in a light blue wash and the blackish-green silhouettes of pine trees. The artist’s detailed application of ink washes and color endows the landscape with a tangible presence, deftly countering the dominant whiteness.
