Chang’s use of exceptionally loose brushwork and subtle gradation of ink in forming the boulders introduces a level of abstraction to the scene. As a contemporary artist, he continues the tradition of Chinese literati art, engaging in a dialogue with old masters while maintaining his unique signature mode of ink painting. This work reflects both Chang’s reverence for Chinese literati art as an art historical art and a contemporary, individualistic approach to innovate within.
