He first transcribed in pencil a paragraph of Hua yü lu (Enlightening Remarks on Painting) by the greatest seventeenth-century individualist painter Shitao (1642-1707) and erased all but only faint outlines of the text. Over these ghostly traces, he painted the rocks and the stalactite grotto with fluttering ink lines and washed them in delicate shades of pale purple and blue, evoking and transforming the Jade Field by the mid-Ming painter Lu Zhi (1496-1576) into a geological wonder.
