The diagonally ranged rock forms are arranged across the hanging scroll into a powerful twist, reminiscent of the “dragon vein” (longmai) as described by Wang Yuanqi (1642-1715). Layered color washes in transparent blue and purple are countered by wet ink dots, nuanced texture, and elegantly fluttering ink lines that make up the mountain outlines, creating a new sense of freedom that departs from Chang’s earlier, more realistic landscapes.
