Tai Xiangzhou's "Milky Way" series embodies a serene yet chaotic essence. The ink washes blend like vast clouds, while the revealed waterfalls and rivers pulse with life. In the artist’s view, the Milky Way symbolizes the distant and the ethereal. The stars provide guidance to human activities in the same way as rivers carry life into the distant shore; one mosaic the sky while the other demarcates the ground; together, they give order and construct our world.

In his works, Tai subverts the structural framework of traditional Chinese ink paintings. His expressive brushworks reiterate the rhythm to traditional landscapes, while the composition’s impenetrable abstractness envisions the primordial state of the universities. The artist claims, “The object of my painting is water, but what I conceive is the wave.” Modern technology disclosed that human observation of the world consists of waves constantly in motion. The artist also envisions his imagination of the world and the university through the philosophy of the waves. Fully leveraging on the expressive quality of the Xieyi method of traditional Chinese painting, he meditates on how ink metamorphs on paper, attempting to observe the interconnectedness of time and the harmonious resonance among matters.
