Lake stones, whether solitary or in layers, are often used as elements of landscape in Chinese classical gardens. For ages, nobles and scholars have revered these stones, their admiration flourishing through the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), and reaching its zenith in the Song era (960-1279 AD). However, in Zhang’s “Scholar’s Rock,” these ancient stones metamorphose into translucent Lego modules, outlined with monochrome ink, connecting and conversing with tradition in a light-hearted and humorous way.
