Together with After Lu Zhi of the first rotation, this kaleidoscopic landscape is one of Chang’s earliest experiments in transcribing in pencil and then erasing the text of Hua yü lu (Enlightening Remarks on Painting) by the greatest seventeenth-century individualist painter Shitao (1642-1707). With only faint outlines of the text left on paper, Chang painted the mountains in grand scale with fluttering ink lines and washed them in delicate shades of pale yellowish red, with blackish green trees along the hills and lower valley, evoking an imagined landscape of exuberance and liveliness.
