This ink painting by Arnold Chang features a towering central mountain that rises triumphantly in the background, surrounded by misty peaks and valleys. Chang’s composition intentionally refers to the hanging scroll Sacred Mountains and Precious Groves by the Yuan landscapist Fang Congyi (1301-1378), now in the collection of National Palace Museum, Taipei. Unlike Fang’s hemp-fiber strokes in the Dong-Ju manner in depicting the mountain, Chang’s work is characterized by spontaneous, fluid lines and exceptionally delicate and subtle ink washes. He employs light and dark ink to create depth and texture, with loose brushwork and especially ink dots suggesting the rugged terrain and dense foliage. The mist enveloping the mountains adds an ethereal quality, enhancing the sense of distance and scale.
