Klotski II takes its inspiration from Hua Rong Dao, a Chinese sliding block puzzle game. The “blocks” used in the game are replaced with elements originating from different spatial and temporal dimensions. According to the rules of Hua Rong Dao, the blocks can be moved and reorganized, which indicates relationship building and breaking among its contents. While the left side of the diptych captures a specific moment of rearranging amongst all possible combinations; the right side presents a solution, which is composed of different layers, each indicating a particular instance. Having transformed its contents, the original rules and goal of the game are negated, rendering the supposed “solution” meaningless. By drawing attention away from “beating the game,” the pleasure of playing becomes connected to the pleasure of spiritual wandering and immerses the viewer within the game space.
