Cherney continued with the same method in 2005–2006 to produce shen dao (“spirit road”), utilizing both recto and verso of each folio. In the exhibition, the albums are displayed upright, offering viewers a pathway of visual exploration. The imagery for shen dao was captured at Gong County in Henan Province, where the Northern Song imperial mausoleums are located. This burial complex—known as the “Seven Emperors, Eight Tombs”—enshrines seven Song emperors (all but Emperor Huizong and Emperor Qinzong) along with the tomb of Zhao Hongyin, father of the dynasty’s founder, Zhao Kuangyin. It stands as a testament to ancient China’s royal mortuary culture and ritual hierarchy.Positioned about two hundred meters from the road, Cherney took one photograph from the west side and another from the east side. He then removed sky and earth from each frame and separated the remaining central sections onto opposite pages of the album: one folio shows the Shinto as seen from the west, and the verso shows it from the east. In one of the images, a motorcyclist happens to ride through the scene, fusing the solemn stone funerary sculptures with contemporary local life. The result is a natural, vivid portrayal of history’s passage. shen dao in the Bounded by Mountains series has been acquired by the Getty Research Institute, the Princeton University Art Museum, the Yale University Art Gallery, and other institutions.
