Dazu album pages were photographed at the Dazu grotto in Chongqing in 2003. This work is the first major piece in Cherney’s acclaimed Bounded by Mountains series and has been acquired by the Princeton University Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The Dazu grotto were begun in the late Tang and Five Dynasties period (9th century) and flourished during the Southern Song and Jin dynasties (13th century), comprising over 5,000 cliff-carved Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian figures that collectively reflect China’s historic synthesis of those three philosophical traditions.
Driven by a deep reverence for classical Chinese culture, Cherney traveled to Dazu to photograph the Śākyamuni Parinirvana carving. From a single 35 mm negative, he carefully selected a narrow fragment, enlarged it, and printed it on xuan paper as an individual folio. The folios were then bound into a traditional accordion-fold album. In the exhibition, the act of leafing through the album is reenacted—its images fractured, continued, obscured, and magnified—recreating and expanding our visual encounter with Song-dynasty Buddhist sculpture.
